6 Tips for a great Summer with ADHD Kids
Summer is the ideal time for parenting the ADHD child. It may sound odd, but if you think about it, stress is low, and there’s ample opportunity for practice! Besides, our kids tend to do really well in the summer. They are often experiential learners – and there’s no better time for learning life lessons than in the summer!
So while you’re finding time to relax and enjoy this summer – and seriously, don’t we ALL need a break, including our kids? – don’t miss the opportunity to make the most of this summer in terms of helping your child to learn self-management skills.
Here are our best 6 tips to get you started!
- Boundaries: Enjoy the freedom of summer by expanding the boundaries of your daily routine. Schedule essential activities as well as free time to explore and relax. > To learn more, follow this link to the full article Setting Boundaries this Summer.
- Wander: Let your kids wander – in their mind that is! Give your child unstructured free time to reflect and think on his/her own. It will increase creativity throughout the day, and may even give you some clues for helping during the school year, too! > For more tips on tips on getting your child's mind to wander, read our article Why It’s Important to Let Your Kid’s Mind Wander Now and Then.
- Laugh: Laugh it out! Using humor as your guide in difficult situations will influence your children to be more cooperative. It will also set an example for them to follow when they face their own frustrations. > To hear more about why laughing is important, watch this quick video Laugh Out Loud.
- Tech Apps: Technology is your friend. Use apps to bring structure to your ADHD house and make daily tasks more fun! > To see our top pics for Apps, read this article 4 Apps to Help Add Structure to Your ADHD Kid’s Routine.
- Hookie: Shh! Don’t tell anyone, but play hookie! Surprise your child by choosing a fun activity over work or other responsibilities. There’s no better time than summer to Play Hookie with your kids. > Follow the link for great ideas on playing hookie with your child this summer.
- Off The Cuff: Be spontaneous! Transitions can be hard for kids, and summer is a great time to practice. Plan “safe” time for activities outside of your usual routine to help your child learn to adapt. > Learn a new approach in Planning to be Spontaneous.
Have a great summer!
