Stimulants for ADHD: Details Matter

To maintain the state of doubt and to carry on systematic and protracted inquiry — these are the essentials of thinking.
John Dewey

stimulants, adhd medication, duration of effectiveness, metabolism, burn rate

Markers Matter

These several videos provide a brief overview of some important differences between stimulant medications and how paying attention to the metabolic – the biomedical – details can make a huge difference in ADHD treatment outcomes. Precision matters.

Markers matter.

Mind And Body

My mission here at CorePsych is simple: Use stimulant medications precisely. If they don't work predictably it's highly likely that your body corrupts the way the stimulants are metabolized. Last time I checked the mind was connected to the body. Yes, the mind does affect the body. But contrary to common opinion, the body dramatically can influence the mind.

This very brief video spells out that Body>Mind connection:

In closing another John Dewey thought about how Details Matter – on Critical Thinking from Brain Pickings:

[There are] certain subprocesses which are involved in every reflective operation. These are: (a) a state of perplexity, hesitation, doubt; and (b) an act of search or investigation directed toward bringing to light further facts which serve to corroborate or to nullify the suggested belief.
John Dewey

  1. Eric Libby says:

    Hey Dr. Parker

    Eric here again,

I was wondering if you could shed some more light. I did what you said and got my biomarkers measured and here is what they sent back.

Dopamine 240.91 = My Biomarkers Results
    Norepinephrine 15.11 = ” ”
    Epinephrine 0.91 = ” ”

I have been on Adderall Xr for a year and its still low. I though about going back to Ritalin.

Does Ritalin increase my norepinephrine and Epinephrine? What would you recommend?

Thanks for your time and help

    Eric

    • Eric,
Lab interpretation is far more complicated that simply looking at numbers and ranges for that specific lab. Even now many docs “treat by LabCorp.” A good example of this problem is Vit D3 wherein LabCorp, in their marked lack of wisdom, sets the medical standard of care – as does managed care, independently of experts in the field. Their low value for Vit D3 is about 30 ng/ml, while every D3 expert in the country is arguing that it should be somewhere between 60-80 ng/ml to remain in good range.

Therefore I make it personal rule not to simply throw out comments based upon some lab, somewhere. So on those questions, I leave that to the lab and your doc.

On the reason why Adderall XR isn’t working, it’s more than likely due to two things: 1. Neurotransmitter changes downstream from 2. an underlying biomedical condition such as gut immunity issues. See these videos on mind and gut:
