Clay Shirky On The Dissemination of Information: Think Medical
Take a moment to watch this video by one of my favorite guys as he talks briefly about the evolution of information and his new book Here Comes Everybody. Clay's point: through collaboration we are changing the process of information exchange, and improving, even on the medical side [my view], the care of thousands of individuals not previously able to see applications in their own lives.
If You Live In Possum Hollow Or Dexter
Information access now reaches out to the boondocks, even small towns like Dexter, MO, [on Thrower St] where I spent 4 years of my childhood. Shirky makes his point well in this video and a variety of presentations over at YouTube.
The power of the internet using communication through social media, blogging, and twitter is speeding the availability of information dramatically, with the same larger social impact, even in medical practice, as the invention of the printing press. I sent out a previous Institutions vs Collaboration Shirky video post [20 min] in early 2010 addressing the context of psych diagnosis and labeling, and the need for evolution of thinking to help those coming into the office. Old labels just aren't working because many don't think in a participatory way with patients – and think the psych label, no matter how ill informed and superficial, will take care of the complexity of psychiatric medical interventions.
